What happened to windows 9?

"Win 7 was supposed to be before Vista"

Not true. Windows 7 was quickly pushed through as a response to Vista being so universally unpopular

Re: Windows 10
Haven't used windows on a personal machine since Vista and that put me off.

Even our office are looking to run our main system on OSX.

It would be nice if they made one like XP again, then I might consider using it again.

I like Win8, gutted?

Re: Windows 10
Win 7 was supposed to be before Vista

Vista was pulled because it was so bad

Win8 won't be long until they do the same and pull it from the "shelf"

It's a touch screen designed operating system on a laptop / desktop. Of course it won't work for people without touch capability. It looks nasty too.

They're trying to follow the APP based platform Apple started on phones / tablets / music players....on a deaktop. Fair play for having the balls to be original, but it's not worked at all.

Another failure.

Re: Windows 10
XP via Vista was a big architectural change so it depends how much 10 changes things again I suppose.

If companies want BA and change management consultancy then I'll do alright out it whatever.

To be honest, I don't know at the mo - I only read the 10 launch stuff on the BBC last night, so no idea what the 7 & 8 end of life plans are. Will read up on it at some point

Re: Windows 10
To be fair from what I do know it isn't worth the upgrade and 7 will be the XP of it's time as firms will not want to go through that change process anytime soon as XP going was a big transition activity.

Are they being more aggressive sun setting this time?

Had windows 8, hated it. Upgraded to 8.1, its fine once you get used to it.

Only thing is, the tablet screen on my asus no longer works since the upgrade, I can only use the laptop screen inside. After a lot of googling, it seems its the 8.1 driver and there is and has been no fix for this, Asus have even refunded people's dosh.

Anyone heard of a fix for this?

Re: Windows 10
Arf!

I run it on my own machine here, and have no problem - but then I'm using third party stuff to customize it. However, as a group we decided to skip it as Windows 7 does what we want without having to fanny about with it

Re: Windows 10
I bow to your corporate knowledge Joe, but personally which to be fair I started off talking about, I've never had an issue.

Have worked IE6 upgrades which was a hassle as developers had to code round things in 6 which they hated in 8 plus.

Have had issues with Office updates too on localised setups so in hindsight I was talking tosh.

I don't even know why I got involved in this state I'm in. Got to sleep you cunt.

Joe C 8:58 Wed Oct 1
Re: Windows 10
Talking absolute tosh there Johnson.

For a standard office setup, Windows 8 is no good without 3rd party customizations - which shouldn't be the case. It's Microsoft's largest market and should get priority. Which is now being reflected in the changes they're introducing in 10

Windows 8 is a pile of shit.

So was Vista. That's two shit operating systems out of their last three. Not a good record.

Re: Windows 10
The other side of the coin is people defending to the death MS offerings simply because they've invested what, to them, is a lot of time & money in training to be granted MS specific certification.

To them, MS is the whole (computing) world and Apple is to be tolerated because a few don't-know-any-better arty media types like it.

It's clear that both MS & Apple have done a wonderful job of brainwashing the public (including, especially, those who are convinced they "know better") into accepting their products as the only solution - not surprising given the money involved.

Re: Windows 10
What kind of setups do you cunts have on your machines? I've upgraded loads of machines and had little problems.

Fashionable to gob off about MS usually by IT boys who might to update their software PROVIDING their firms take it on.

If they don't and you're SE just stay on your companies OS and do a virtual or buy more gear on the company.

MS hating is more ridiculous than Apple hating, unsurprisingly it's always the same people.

Divs I say.

Re: Windows 10
They can just fuck off. They lost me with 8.0 and now I've got my computer working how I want it to (NOT how someone else thinks I should want it to), I won't be investing any of my time & money in it.

I'm sure Microsoft give less than a flying one about what I feel personally, but were I to translate that attitude into the policy of, say, the procurement department of a large government department...

I have 8.1 on mine. Out of the box I hated it. Then I installed Start 8 and now it's like Win 7, but with touchscreen. The tablet style interface is just horrible on a computer.

Cough - have a read of the BBC article, details it more than I can be arsed to on my phone. But suffice to say the proper start menu has returned, without the need for something like ClassicShell
